New York Times and Kitsap Sun Post Stories on Washington State’s Growing Health Care Crisis

Concerns about the huge numbers of mergers/consolidations between Catholic-run health care ministries and secular facilities continue to rise.

Kirk Johnson of the New York Times posted this article last night about the wave of mergers and consolidations here in Washington that will put the Catholic bishops in control of almost half the hospital beds (a proxy for the healthcare system more broadly) by the end of the year.

And Rachel Pritchett of the Kitsap Sun posted this article about the upcoming takeover of Bremerton’s Harrison Hospital on the Olympic Peninsula by Catholic Health Initiative’s Franciscan health care ministry.  As part of CHI/Franciscan, Harrison will be required to abide by the Catholic bishops’ Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care, which are summarized here.
