Today, Al Jazeera America published an article about women’s health care being compromised in Catholic health care ministries.
For people who are interested in learning more, below are some links that should prove useful. Note that the data included below likely understates the issue simply because Catholic health care ministries have continued to take over secular systems at an aggressive pace.
1) Links about what’s happening in Washington State and how many hospitals are Catholic controlled: ACLU site map from May, 2013 showing likely concentration once all current mergers/affiliations then underway are complete. The map is part of a longer presentation the ACLU prepared on this topic. More recently, in a joint project with MergerWatch, the ACLU said that 44% of the acute care hospitals in Washington State are likely to be controlled by the Catholic Church once planned mergers are completed.
2) Source for information that greater than 30% of hospital admissions in at least eight states are to Catholic hospitals: The New York Times
3) For information about Catholic ethics policies concerning methotrexate, here is a link to a relevant post by the Director of Education of the National Catholic Bioethics Center explaining why nonsurgical intervention is immoral. Note that the National Catholic Bioethics Center counsels hospitals and bishops on ethics issues.
